The fleur de lis is a classic symbol of life, light, and purity - a stylized lily (or iris) mainly associated with French monarchy but seen in the heraldic traditions of many diverse peoples throughout history. It appears on the flag of the City of Detroit along with the city's motto "speramus meliora, resurget cineribus;" both are references to purfication and renewal. The intersecting geometric shapes represent the cultural and economic shifts our city has seen over time. Intersection of the red, green, and blue segments (primary colors of light) overlaid by a central white fleur de lis symbolize Detroit's enduring unity.
